Subject: This is a nice film about solidarity.
Something entertaining for the heart. Three kids grow up in rather harsh circumstances in a slum area of New York and stay together as adults despite all obstacles.

Subject: Rags to ill-gotten riches
This is an old-school crime melodrama in which four childhood friends in the slums of New York grow up to be two cops, a priest and a gambling kingpin. If you've seen the classics "Manhattan Melodrama" and "Angels With Dirty Faces," you know where this one is going. Victor McLaglen has top billing as the gambler. The action is standard. There is a less than great musical number. There are no complaints about the cast that also includes William Gargan and Paul Kelly. Coming from Universal, the production values are well above average for a second feature. No surprises here, nevertheless it's an entertaining time passer typical of the soft ending of the first gangster film era. The bottom line is by 1938 the Production Code had taken much of the bite out of films like this.

Subject: Pretty Good
This one's worth a look. The cast is pretty good and there's a good amount of action throughout.
